Rakesh K. Jain, the A. Werk Cook Professor of Radiation Oncology and director of the Edwin L. Steele Laboratory for Tumor Biology at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital, received the 2012 Science of Oncology Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology. The award recognizes Jain’s three decades of pioneering work in the field of oncology.

After three years as an assistant professor of chemical engineering at Columbia University, Jain accepted a faculty position in chemical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University in 1978, where he began his groundbreaking work in understanding barriers to drug delivery in tumors. Using in vivo microscopy, the research team in Jain’s laboratory was instrumental in showing that blood vessels in tumors are abnormal both structurally and functionally. In 1991, Jain’s research in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Harvard Medical School showed that the abnormal structure and function of tumor vessels was a consequence of an imbalance between angiogenic and antiangiogenic factors within the tumor microenvironment.

“I feel enormously honored that ASCO should recognize the work of an engineer and an outsider who ventured into this field,” Jain said. “I am very fortunate to have terrific students and collaborators who have made this journey compelling and productive.”
